The best way to get to know Learning in Style and to assess whether this would be a good place to offer your talents and skills is to come and visit us. Get to know us by taking a tour. Spend some time talking to us and get a sense of our school community.
Expectations of Volunteers
In order to be successful at Learning in Style, volunteers need to:
- Articulate their expectations and goals for their volunteer experience;
- Communicate honestly and directly as it relates to their experience;
- Negotiate a service time schedule which is both realistic for the volunteer and helpful for the school;
- Arrive at Learning in Style, ready to work, at the time agreed upon;
- Remain onsite until the closing time agreed upon;
- Inform LIS as early as possible when/if it is not possible to come for service time;
- Wear an obvious nametag every day, saying “Teacher __(Name)__“;
- Wear clothing and jewelry which will offend no culture and promote no particular religious faith;
- Treat all students as dignified adults;
- Maintain strict confidentiality as it relates to students and their lives;
- Observe cultural mores of respect and modesty at all times, as instructed.
When Learning in Style takes on volunteers, we see it as incorporating new peer members into the school community. This philosophy has several aspects:
- Volunteers must abide by all policies and procedures that LIS has taken on as recipients of federal and state monies.
- Volunteers must pass a criminal background check.
- Volunteers must complete a 12-hour Minnesota Literacy course.
- Volunteers who have significant student contact must have approved training prior to their service at LIS.
- Volunteers who will have student contact on a more occasional basis need to be willing to work under the direction of faculty and staff.
- All volunteers must abide by the LIS Policy Manual.
- Volunteers who will spend significant time at LIS are expected to attend all faculty meetings.
- Volunteers are strongly encouraged to eat lunch with the faculty and staff. LIS has found that being together at lunch is the best way for one to feel a real part of this ministry.
